Mastitis (Breast Infection)

💡 Mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue that can cause pain, swelling, and fever. It’s common during the first few weeks of breastfeeding but can be treated effectively

Symptoms of Mastitis:

✅ Severe breast pain, especially during feeding.
✅ Redness and swelling in one part of the breast.
✅ Feeling of warmth or feverish skin around the affected area.
✅ Fever (above 38°C) and chills.
✅ Fatigue and body aches.

📌 If you experience these symptoms, act quickly to prevent worsening of the condition.

🦠 Causes of Mastitis:

💡 Mastitis is often caused by clogged milk ducts or bacterial infections, with common triggers including:

🔹 Blocked milk ducts—when the breast isn’t fully emptied, leading to milk buildup and inflammation.
🔹 Cracked nipples—allow bacteria to enter the breast tissue.
🔹 Infrequent nursing or incomplete milk removal—skipping feedings or not fully emptying the breast.
🔹 Wearing tight bras—which may restrict proper milk flow, causing milk stasis.

How to Treat Mastitis?

Continue breastfeeding or expressing milk

  • It may be painful, but it helps clear the milk duct and reduce engorgement.
  • Start feeding on the affected breast first, as the baby’s strong suck helps drain the milk.

Massage and warm compresses

  • Massage the affected area during feeding to help milk flow.
  • Use warm compresses before feeding to unclog the ducts.
  • Apply cold compresses after feeding to reduce swelling.

Get rest and stay hydrated 💧

  • Mastitis can cause fatigue, so ensure you get enough rest.
  • Drink plenty of water to support healing and maintain milk production.

Use pain relievers if needed 💊

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation—consult your doctor first.

Seek medical help if symptoms persist 🏥

  • If symptoms do not improve within 24-48 hours, or if they worsen, antibiotics may be required.
  • See your doctor and seek advice regarding medications such as antibiotics

📌 Don’t stop breastfeeding if you have mastitis—your milk is safe for your baby and helps speed up recovery!
